Drinking enough water: 7 signs to watch out for
Summer is just around the corner, and good hydration is more important than ever. But are you actually drinking enough water? Headaches, sugar cravings… Discover the 7 warning signs you shouldn’t ignore.
Water is essential for the proper functioning of our body, as you can read on our blog. Your breathing, perspiration, and digestion all require water from your system. It is therefore essential to rehydrate regularly. This is especially true for the elderly (read our article on seniors and water) and young children. That is why it is important to recognize the signs of dehydration.
1. You are constantly craving sugar
If you don't get enough fluids, your body will struggle to generate energy from available glucose reserves, and you will start craving sweets. In that case, if you feel hungry even though you've already eaten, it may indicate that you are dehydrated.
2. You suffer from constipation
Water ensures smoother movement of food through your digestive system. It also keeps your stool soft, which leads to easier bowel movements. If you are dehydrated, your stool becomes harder and you may have trouble going to the bathroom regularly. Additionally, you are more prone to a sometimes painful bloated feeling.
Our body cannot store water, so it is essential to hydrate regularly
3. You have bad breath despite good oral hygiene
When you are dehydrated, you produce less saliva. This promotes the spread of bacteria on your gums and between your teeth, which can lead to chronic bad breath.
4. Your urine is darker
If you don't drink enough water, your kidneys retain as much fluid as possible to continue functioning. As a result, your urine may become darker in color, slightly cloudy, and have a stronger odor.
5. You feel constantly tired
Not drinking enough can lead to a decrease in the amount of blood in your body. Consequently, the heart has to work extra hard to pump oxygen and nutrients to the organs and muscles. This leaves you feeling constantly tired, even if you sleep well.
6. Your skin loses elasticity
Lack of hydration can cause your skin to lose volume and elasticity. As a result, your skin becomes dry, flaky, and slack, and you may develop wrinkles. Hydration even reduces acne and other skin problems by flushing harmful toxins out of the body.
7. You suffer from headaches
Headaches are common in mild to moderate dehydration. Those who experience headaches often have other symptoms of dehydration at the same time, such as dizziness, intense thirst, and a dry mouth.
