Irritable bowel syndrome: what treatment?
Bloating, diarrhea, constipation... Irritable Bowel Syndrome causes a great many unpleasant chronic digestive problems. Fortunately, the syndrome is not life-threatening, and its symptoms are easy to alleviate.
Every person dealing with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) exhibits different – but always chronic – symptoms. These include abdominal pain and transit problems, such as bloating, diarrhea, constipation, or alternating diarrhea and constipation.
Diagnosis by exclusion
Certain pathologies, such as Crohn's disease, celiac disease, or bowel cancer, cause the same symptoms as IBS. For this reason, a gastroenterologist cannot diagnose IBS immediately, but instead checks a whole series of criteria to rule out potential serious diseases.
To guide the diagnosis in the right direction, a simple questionnaire is used. As long as you do not exhibit alarming symptoms, such as weight loss, blood and mucus in the stool, or nocturnal symptoms, serious diseases can be ruled out. Finally, depending on your age and family history, the gastroenterologist will perform additional examinations (blood test, endoscopy, etc.).

Various causes
The causes of IBS have not yet been determined with certainty and are therefore still being researched. Currently, the most plausible explanation is as follows: the syndrome appears when the small intestine is no longer able to digest certain molecules from some nutrients, such as lactose in milk. Consequently, the molecules stay in the intestine, where they are absorbed by intestinal bacteria. These bacteria release gas and multiply. This causes bloating, constipation, abdominal cramps, flatulence, or even diarrhea.
Why does the small intestine no longer function properly?
Either because you eat something that the intestine does not like, and in a much too large quantity. You might be able to digest some of the ingested molecules, but not all of them. Or it may be the result of an enzyme deficiency. Certain enzymes should actually break down nutrients, but are no longer present or are only present in small amounts in the small intestine.
A few tips
As yet, there is no specific treatment to cure Irritable Bowel Syndrome. However, the following tips can help you keep the symptoms under control:
- Adjust your diet: find out which nutrients cause digestive problems and stop eating or drinking them, or consume them in moderation.
- Treat the symptoms: use laxatives in case of constipation, take an anti-diarrheal medication if you have diarrhea. Nowadays, however, it is also possible to treat all symptoms of IBS simultaneously. Detoxner IBS helps to reduce the main complaints of IBS, corrects and optimizes the natural intestinal flora, and thereby improves quality of life.
- Avoid factors that make it worse: coffee, tobacco, and also stress stimulate intestinal contractions.
