Love for animals, ecological awareness, a healthier lifestyle… All reasons why more and more people are choosing a plant-based diet. Trendy dishes, new products and great spots: discover the biggest vegan trends of 2023 in Belgium.

Today, there are many reasons to question our food choices and our way of consuming. More and more people are therefore opting for a plant-based diet. The vegan market is growing and evolving rapidly, yet it can sometimes be difficult to find your way around it. Whether you are a vegan, a flexitarian or just curious about new flavours, we have listed a few trends to try out this year!

Easy and trendy vegan dishes

We often come across them on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube… In recent months, we have been flooded on social networks with a number of quick and easy dishes. For example…

  • Porridge, oatmeal with plant-based milk substitutes. The possibilities of this porridge are endless: a 'bounty' version as a snack, a 'tiramisu' version as a dessert or just with fruit for an instant healthy breakfast… anything is possible!
  • Savoury pancakes with protein-rich red lentils.
  • Buddha bowls, which are easy to prepare and packed with vegetables.
  • Vegan Asian dishes: ramen, stir-fries, spring rolls… 2023 is a year full of Asian flavours.

According to the company Takeaway, the number of vegan orders has increased by 200% in 2 years!

Original vegan products that are easy to obtain

Until recently, it was not easy to obtain essential products with which you can develop new vegan recipes: miso cubes, nutritional yeast, jackfruit, egg substitutes, etc.

But lately, especially in organic shops, these products are appearing more and more! Previously, they were often only available online (sometimes on unreliable websites). But now it is perfectly possible to make unique dishes that are both creative and tasty!

Your favourite products now also in a plant-based version

Choosing veganism does not have to mean saying goodbye to your favourite products. Many brands are currently developing vegan alternatives for widely sold products (KitKat, Babybel, Philadelphia, Magnum, Cécémel…).

And that trend is also continuing outside the supermarket: the bakery brand Paul has made a 100% vegan croissant for Veganuary; Maison Dandoy has recently launched a vegan range… And let's not forget the vegetarian and even plant-based products from brands such as Panos, Starbucks and many others!

More and more vegan dishes in restaurants, for takeaway or dining in

We will give you some tips for great places to eat vegan! Fast-food restaurants are becoming greener and many restaurants now offer vegan options or even exclusively vegan menus.

And you can also find good spots near you with the HappyCow app. Still, we would like to highlight some unique places that are worth a visit in 2023:

  • Humus x Hortense (Brussels), which was named the best vegan restaurant in the world in 2019 and received a Michelin star in 2023;
  • WILDn (Antwerp), which has been awarded a green Michelin star;
  • Arabelle Meirlaen (Marchin), a restaurant that has received an 18/20 rating from Gault&Millau;
  • Soul Kitchen (Ghent), which was recently named the best place to dine on plant-based food;
  • Verdô (Brussels), a brand-new vegan brasserie that is already making waves!

In addition, food trucks are proving to be a huge success and a trend that appeals to everyone, even veggies!
