‘Glucose Revolution’: lose weight by eating your food in a different order
Jessie Inchauspé, a French biochemist, has developed a diet where you can eat anything, without restrictions. The concept? While glucose is necessary, it is best not absorbed into the blood too quickly. That is why it is better to eat glucose-rich foods at the end of your meal to slow down digestion.1
In her book ‘Glucose Revolution’, Jessie Inchauspé explains that not only will you feel more energetic if your blood sugar level remains stable and low, but you will also lose weight without extra effort. The key to this diet is to carefully determine the order in which you eat your food during a meal.2
Keeping your blood sugar stable, not just for weight loss2
According to Jessie Inchauspé, 80% of people without diabetes experience daily glucose spikes. These spikes have an impact on 3 physiological processes: insulin secretion, inflammation, and premature aging of the body. If you keep your blood sugar under control, you influence those processes and will suffer less from cravings and binge eating, fatigue and sleep problems, symptoms of aging and wrinkles, skin problems, and much more.
Never eat sugar on an empty stomach, otherwise you are guaranteed a glucose spike
The 5 rules of the Glucose Revolution diet1,2
- Change the order of what you eat. Start your meal with vegetables (the fiber will slow down glucose absorption into the blood), then proteins, fats, legumes, and—finally—sugars. This will reduce the glucose spike by 50% to 70%. Always eat fruit at the end of the meal.
- Preferably eat a ‘savory’ breakfast.
- Eat only whole pieces of fruit, never fruit juice or dried fruit.
- Never eat sugary foods on an empty stomach.
- Walk for 10 minutes after every meal. Your muscles will then use the sugars as fuel.
Eating whatever you want—is that a realistic diet?
The diet is scientifically supported, but some nuance is still required…
- The stomach is like a bag where everything from a meal ends up and is broken down. According to some, an unstructured meal therefore makes no sense.3 However, if you start with fiber, it can help you eat more of it.
- Jessie Inchauspé recommends starting the meal with a glass of water containing apple cider vinegar. This is an appetite suppressant, but the high acidity can lead to dental problems.3
- Pay attention to the glycemic index: certain low-sugar foods are not necessarily healthy.3
The Glucose Revolution is therefore a new approach that helps consume more fiber and contributes to more controlled blood sugar levels. Moreover, it makes it easier to lose weight without having to deprive yourself of anything!
