What is PEP exactly?
Prolyl endopeptidase (PEP) is a digestive enzyme that helps break down proline-rich proteins. These proteins are primarly found in grains such as wheat, spelt, rye, barley, green spelt and in products made from these grains. The amino acid proline is an important building block for the strength and structure of connective tissues, such as collagen, bones and blood vessels.
The proline-rich proteins from grains are typically difficult to digest in the human digestive system. In people with increased sensitivity to these undigested components, the consumption of grains can lead to digestive discomfort, headaches, fatigue, joint and muscle pain, and sometimes even mood issues.
