Low sugar – Sugar free – With sweetener

What is sugar?

Sugar is an important source of energy for the body, but eating too much sugar is not good for our health (on average, Belgians eat 75 g of added quick sugars per day).

Eating less or no sugar offers benefits for many people, causing more and more people to consciously eat less sugar.

Sugars have a sweet taste and are naturally present in food (e.g., glucose and fructose in fruit, lactose in milk).

Sugars are also often added in meal preparation and in foods. These added sugars are sucrose (sucrose) or table sugar, but also dextrose (grape sugar), fructose, maltose, syrup, honey, coconut blossom sugar, invert sugar or molasses. These consist mainly of mono- and disaccharides such as glucose, fructose or a combination of these.

Low sugar versus Sugar Free

Low-sugar eating means eating a diet low in sugars. A low-sugar diet is also called a sugar-free diet, but because sugar is naturally present in vegetables, fruits and dairy, eating and drinking completely sugar-free is impossible. Moreover, these foods are also a source of vitamins, minerals and fiber, making them important for a balanced diet.

Sugar is added to many foods for the sake of texture, color, taste and shelf life. Not only in fruit juices, lemonades, cakes … but also in products you wouldn’t suspect, such as processed meats, soup and sauce powders, among others …. So sugars are sometimes hidden!

If food is sweetened with sweetener, this must always be indicated on the package. Sweetener is added as a substitute for sugar (e.g. maltitol, sorbitol).

Therefore, anyone who wants or needs to eat low-sugar or sugar-free for health reasons will have to reduce the total amount of sugars and choose foods whose natural sugar content is not too high, add less refined sugar to preparations or meals and choose products with fewer added sugars.

To best help consumers, packaging are labeled with health claims.
