Enriched in protein – Modified texture

What is protein-enriched nutrition?

Healthy adults need 0.8 g protein/kg body weight/day to maintain all the functions of the body. With aging, as well as with illness, intense exercise, recovery … the requirement rises sharply to 1.5 g/kg body weight/day. In extreme cases even up to 2 g/kg body weight/day. For someone weighing 50 kg, this amounts to about 75 to 80 g of protein/day. So it is important to compose meals in a balanced way with sufficient protein sources such as meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, eggs, grains, legumes, …

However, sometimes this need cannot be met such as in the case of illness, low appetite, problems with chewing and swallowing… If adequate action is not taken, this can lead to unwanted weight loss, loss of muscle mass and reduction of muscle strength resulting in a limitation of mobility and loss of independence.

Small compact meals enriched with concentrated fast-absorbing proteins and protein-rich snacks are then necessary.

Why are proteins so important?

  1. Proteins are essential for growth and development: they help build and maintain the body.
  2. Proteins provide energy and building materials to maintain muscle and create new tissue.
  3. Proteins are important for recovery such as wound healing.
  4. Proteins are important for our resistance.
  5. Proteins contribute to the formation of healthy bones.
  6. Proteins are necessary for the transport of substances in the blood.
  7. Proteins are building blocks of hormones.
  8. The elderly and sick need more protein than others.

What is food with a modified texture?

Eating and drinking sufficiently is not evident for people with chewing & swallowing problems. The swallowing process is complex and numerous reasons can cause disorders in the swallowing process.

Getting people with swallowing problems to eat and drink safely requires a great deal of expertise. They deliberately eat and drink less for fear of choking or because eating requires a lot of energy.

Foods and beverages should be smooth and soft, amylase resistant, without pieces and with a consistently safe custom texture. The international IDDSI recommendations are used for this purpose.

What is Fingerfood?

“Finger food” literally means “eating with your fingers”. One usually thinks of the appetizers you get at a reception or party: amuse-gueules, appetizers, croquettes, hamburgers, a packet of French fries …

However, in healthcare, finger food is about eating with your hands and has nothing to do with all these examples. In a hospital or residential care center, it is a full alternative to a classic meal eaten with knife and fork. It is a feeding method that involves eating small bites with the hands. Because of its firm texture, finger foods do not fall apart. Our many varieties of finger foods are enriched, so they contain all the nutrients needed for good health (proteins, minerals, vitamins, essential fatty acids). They have different shapes and colors that can help certain patients recognize the food and stimulate the senses.
